The cliche goes that if you think positively then you see the glass as half full, and if you are a pessimist then you see it as half empty. Both perspectives are seeing one aspect of reality, and tend to judge the other as wrong. This is how most arguments and wars happen; we see things as black or white, and then get attached to one perspective.
The truth is that the glass is both half full and half empty at the same time. When we can see that, we don’t have to choose between being idealistic or negative, or judge one perspective as better. We can accept that life has both light and dark aspects, and have the awareness to be with both. What this means is that every area of life, whether it’s our career or relationships, will show us pain and pleasure. If we accept that, we can enjoy the pleasurable parts without thinking “this is too good to be true”, and sit with the uncomfortable parts instead of avoiding them. How do you feel about that?
